With the story not quite up to the task, it's the locations in World At War that sets it apart from other Call Of Duty titles. When combined with the usual in-game intensity and the shrieks and screams of soldiers in battle, World At War manages to get inside the heads of gamers, albeit without the aid of a compelling narrative. The game's use of actual WWII footage, coupled with factual statistics and an increase in on-screen brutality, is where World At War does pack an emotional punch. However, as interesting as the themes may be, the individual storylines aren't incredibly compelling and the storytelling, which is slightly jumpy (due in a large part to its historical context), falls short of that witnessed in Modern Warfare. The campaign mode lays on the vengeance theme very thickly and also looks at the fine line between war and murder. Beginning in Stalingrad and surrounded by countless deceased comrades, Petrenko meets the injured Sergeant Reznov, voiced by Gary Oldman, who requests his help in avenging the deaths of all of the Russian soldiers. The exploits of Private Miller are interspersed with the journey of Private Dimitri Petrenko of the Red Army. As Private Miller you play through various jungle-themed levels and participate in historical battles, such as the Battle of Peleliu and the Battle of Okinawa, all of which culminate in the Shuri Castle siege. The opening scene begins on Makin Island, with players witnessing the brutal execution of a US soldier through the eyes of Private Miller, a US Marine. The campaigns focus on the Pacific wars between the US and Japan and the capture of Berlin by the Russians. Treyarch's decision to venture back into WWII territory was a contentious one, but fortunately it has picked two campaigns and locations that have seen little action in WWII video games and even less in the Call Of Duty series. Has Treyarch managed to silence the doubters and put the ghosts of COD 3 behind it? Are they able to freshen up the rather stale WWII backdrop? The answer is yes, with a but.
